Taksim Trio’s self-titled album is a critically acclaimed instrumental work that topped the Turkish charts for three months, blending traditional Turkish music with jazz and classical influences through the virtuosic interplay of clarinet, bağlama, and kanun. Released in 2007 on Doublemoon Records, the album showcases three master musicians—Hüsnü Şenlendirici, İsmail Tunçbilek, and Aytaç Doğan—performing with an intuitive chemistry that reviewers have described as “otherworldly” and “a musical opus.”

The Musicians and Their Instruments

The trio consists of three of Turkey’s most admired instrumentalists:

Musician Instrument Characteristics
Hüsnü Şenlendirici Clarinet (also duduk) Fluid, creamy tone; the highest-profile member, whose previous album sold over 160,000 copies
İsmail Tunçbilek Bağlama (acoustic and electric) Clear-toned; described as veering toward electric guitar in texture
Aytaç Doğan Kanun (zither) Dryer, more guitar-like; piquant metallic refractions

Musical Style and Approach

The album operates at the intersection of multiple traditions. It dances between traditional Turkish music, arabesque, jazz, and avant-garde, with each musician bringing their own musical identity to update familiar melodies. Critically, the ensemble performs without percussion, giving the music an elastic sense of time and a gentle, flowing quality. The three instruments’ textures—”watery ripples for the lute, piquant metallic light refractions for the kanun, soft reediness for the vibrato-rich clarinet”—combine in unusual and captivating ways.

The concept of “taksim” (improvisation) is central. As one reviewer explains, the magic lies in “a trio of three soloists all engaged in simultaneous taksim”—none is a mere accompanist; they accompany each other while soloing at once. Each musician also gets a dedicated solo track: “Bağlama Solo,” “Klarnet Solo,” and “Kanun Solo”.

Critical Reception

Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. The Independent noted that the album held Turkey’s No. 1 spot for three months and praised how the musicians “simply play to serve their material, settling down to create a rich, ornate sound which relies as much on the silences between the notes as the aching notes themselves”. Sputnikmusic called it “one of the most beautiful compositions of music you will ever hear,” highlighting the trio’s ability to improvise together “remaining harmonious while playing without any prescribed notation”. A Songlines review observed that while the music feels fresh and improvised, it may be more pre-planned than it sounds, and noted it “will appeal to newcomers to Turkish music as well as cognoscenti”.

The album is also described as “super-ambient,” meant to “seep into the listener’s mind and unravel over time”.
